Argonne National Laboratory: Computing, Environment and Life Sciences The mission of Argonne's Computing, Environment and Life Sciences (CELS) directorate is to enable groundbreaking scientific and technical accomplishments in areas of critical importance in the 21st century. The goals are threefold: advancing biology, advancing the intersection of computing and biology, and advancing all activities involving computation. To this end, the CELS has integrated Argonne's research in the life sciences (systems biology, bioinformatics, computational biology) and the computing sciences (applied mathematics, computer science, and computational science) and has established a leadership computing facility essential for advanced simulation. http://www.cels.anl.gov Argonne National Laboratory University of Chicago launches cloud to analyze cancer data The University of Chicago is launching the first secure cloud-based computing system that will enable researchers to access and analyze human genomic cancer information without the costly and cumbersome infrastructure normally needed to download and http://www.cels.anl.gov/news/detail.php?id=970 Pavan Balaji selected as TEDxMidwest Emerging Leader Pavan Balaji, a computer scientist in Argonne’s MCS Division, was selected as a TEDxMidwest Emerging Leader, the only one of 25 honorees from a national laboratory. http://www.cels.anl.gov/news/detail.php?id=966 Adventures in Parallelism: celebrating 30 years of parallel computing at Argonne On May 14-15, Argonne will host a two-day symposium to celebrate many of the visionaries who initiated and contributed to Argonne’s history of advancing parallel computing and computational science. http://www.cels.anl.gov/news/detail.php?id=968 Paul Messina awarded the Thomas Hart Benton Mural Medallion Computing pioneer and renowned computer scientist Paul Messina received high honors, as Indiana University president Michael McRobbie presented him with the distinguished Thomas Hart Benton Mural Medallion. http://www.cels.anl.gov/news/detail.php?id=956 Ian Foster at TEDxCERN Ian Foster, Argonne Distinguished Fellow and Director of the Computation Institute at the University of Chicago, will present "Science as Voyage" at the first-ever TEDxCERN conference in Geneva, Switzerland. http://www.cels.anl.gov/news/detail.php?id=954 Lois Curfman McInnes, Senior Computational Scientist Q&A with Senior Computational Scientist Lois Curfman McInnes. http://www.cels.anl.gov/news/detail.php?id=964 University, Argonne big on data The University of Chicago Computation Institute (C.I.) is collaborating with Argonne National Laboratory and the Institute for Genomics and Systems Biology (IGSB) on two “big data” projects, the Beagle supercomputer and the Bionimbus Clou http://www.cels.anl.gov/news/detail.php?id=960 Special Journal Issue Highlights Multiphysics Research Special issue of International Journal of High Performance Computing Applications highlights multiphysics research. http://www.cels.anl.gov/news/detail.php?id=962 Big Data Week Day 2: Joe Insley As part of Big Data Week in Chicago, Joe Insley, principal software development specialist at Argonne, gave a talk about how the lab is using its supercomputer Mira to create visualizations that crunch data at a galactic size and monst http://www.cels.anl.gov/news/detail.php?id=958 Obama Campaign Chief Data Scientist Joins University of Chicago Rayid Ghani, chief scientist of the highly regarded Obama for America data analytics team, has joined the University of Chicago to explore using data to solve complex social problems. http://www.cels.anl.gov/news/detail.php?id=953
